SPH Medical Air Transfer Mat

In 2021, SPH Medical asked Rennacker Studio to design and engineer a device that would help caregivers and hospital staff transfer immobile patients from one surface to another while maintaining caregiver and patient safety. Ultimately, we designed a disposable product that acted like an inflatable air mattress with small pin-holes in the bottom which effectively created a levitation effect (almost like a reverse air hockey table). This solution significantly reduces push/pull forces for caregivers and hospital staff while keeping the patient level and secure.

In February of 2023, SPH Medical returned, but this time wanted to make a premium version of that same product. We ultimately decided to create a reusable version using vinyl and nylon that could be easily sterilized between patient uses.

Once the reusable version was created, we were also tasked with photographing and and designing marketing materials for the newest addition to SPH Medical's proprietary product lineup and making a few revisions to a (previously made) instructional video, teaching caregivers how to properly transfer patients using proper safe patient handling (SPH) techniques.
